Sketch Pad Scamp
Project
1972 Plymouth Scamp
HIGHLIGHTS
The Sketch Pad Scamp was dreamed up when Hot Rod Magazine asked our man, Steve Strope, to create a sketch pad of a few cars that could still be purchased relatively cheap and customized at home more in line with the roots of hot rodding. The 72 Scamp was on that list because it's always taken a back seat to it's close relative, the Dodge Dart. Basically a "grandma car" when new, demand and price for these cars has remained resonable while other cars of the era are now out of reach for most of us. With a few mild modifications, the right wheels, and a killer stance, Steve envisioned the Scamp as the muscle car it should have been.
After the sketch pad article came out, Steve was sitting at lunch with our friend Bob from ARP and Bob just couldn't stop looking at and thinking about that Scamp. Finally, he couldn't stop himself and he said to Steve, "We have to build that." Steve thought Bob was just talking in the general sense and agreed that it was really cool and he hoped somebody would build it. After a bit of clarification, Steve realized that Bob wanted the car and they met up again to hash out the details.
A few months later, the car made it's debut at the 2021 SEMA show and was awarded "Best Mopar" from three different magazines! It features a stroked 360 topped off with a Holley Terminator EFI system that was built over at Ed Pink Racing Engines. The Air Grabber hood turned out to be a lot more work than anticipated but is now fully functional. Vintage Air, Kicker, and Dynamat make the Gabe's Custom Upholstry interior a nice place to be, while the Flaming River steering and Redline Gaugeworks dash keep the driver in tune with the car's inner workings. Suspension is simple with an inboard leafspring kit, Fat Man Fabrication dropped spindles, and JRI shocks. The Michelin Tire wrapped custom wheels were created by Billet Specialties. They hide the Baer Brakes and recieve motivation through a Gear Venders overdrive. All of it is wrapped in body and paint from Mick's Paint and the whole build harkens back to the idea of a simple build that emphasizes smart choices and a rewarding driver experience.
